Style of writing

The language style used in the story “Karma” by Khushwant Singh often supports the characterisations. For example, Sir Mohan uses formal English to show that he is well-educated: “ 'Preposterous, preposterous,' he shouted, hoarse with anger” (p. 182, ll. 14-16). 

In contrast to Sir Mohan, the two English soldiers who throw him out of the train use informal expressions, which suggests their lower-class background. Furthermore, their use of Hindi words suggests their own feeling of superiority over Sir Mohan, as it shows they assume he does not speak English: “ ‘Get the nigger out,’ he muttered to his companion.” (p. 182, l. 2); “ ‘Ek dum jao – get out!’ ” (p. 182, l. 8)

Words or phrases with negative connotations are used mostly in connection with India and Sir Mohan’s life there, showing his negative perspective on his native country: “inefficient, dirty, indifferent” (p. 178, ll. 6-7); “dirty, vulgar countrymen” (p. 181, l. 28); “obese old Lachmi, smelling of sweat and raw onion” (p. 181, l. 30). In contrast, Sir Mohan uses positive words to characterise himself and to show his feelings about life in England: “ ‘Distinguished, efficient – even handsome” (p. 178, ll. 9-10);...
