The end of the conflict

The Troubles continued in Northern Ireland throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, especially because of the IRA’s on-going armed campaign. However, in 1983, the republicans’ political wing Sinn Féin started to peacefully negotiate the end of the conflicts. Some loyalists were also trying to negotiate a peaceful resolution by secretly talking with the British and Irish governments through the Protestant clergy.

After a lot of political strategies, paramilitary groups on both sides finally agreed to a ceasefire in 1994. However, the ceasefire was reached after a violent year in 1993, which was characterised by bombings and attacks on both sides.
