Since its independence, India has gone through various political and economic phases.

India maintained good political relations with most countries, including the United Kingdom, and is a Commonwealth member. The Commonwealth is an international organisation formed by former territories of the British Empire. The members have no legal obligations. The organization is based on their shared history, culture, and values.

During the 1950s and 1960s, India was also a strong supporter of decolonisation in Africa and Asia. However, India’s relations with Pakistan have remained tense, largely because of the disputed territory of Kashmir. The countries have fought wars against each other in 1947, 1965, 1971, and 1999.

Also, India has had a tense relationship with China, especially since China threatened to intervene in favour of Pakistan in the 1965 war. This pushed India to develop its own nuclear weapons, despite criticism in the international community. After the end of the Cold War, India became a closer partner of the US, especially in terms of economic and strategic aspects.
