Meghan Markle’s article was written at the request of ELLE magazine (ll. 29-30), and published in July 2015.

At the time when she wrote the article, Markle was 32 years old. She was already a well-known actress, as she had reached celebrity status after taking on the role of Rachel Zane on the popular TV series Suits in 2011. At the time, she was also known for her involvement in philanthropic work, with achieving gender equality being one of her main interests.

The article was republished in December 2016, as Meghan Markle's fame grew after she began a relationship with the British Prince Harry, which would eventually lead to marriage. 

Racism and police brutality in the US

In her article, Markle shares a few moments in her life in which she encountered prejudice and racism. However, as she points out, these events are part of the larger problem with racism in America. She brings up important events in the US that show that police brutality against African Americans and racial tensions are long-standing issues in the US.
