Pathos
Meghan Markle often appeals to readers’ emotions by describing situations in which she experienced prejudice and racism. These situations often provoked strong emotions, which readers can sympathise with.
Markle appeals to the audience’s sympathy and compassion as she describes her confusion when, as a child, she was asked to define her ethnicity (ll. 87-97). Pathos is especially created here as it appeals to readers’ compassion for children who might be in this difficult situation.
Readers might feel a sense of admiration when they learn about Markle’s parents’ efforts to make her feel special by customising a Barbie doll set to resemble their family (ll. 62-75).
We also learn that Markle’s father advised her to create her own identity, and how this influenced her throughout her life (ll. 100-103), which may be inspirational especially for readers who are parents.
