Literary period

The short story “Ice cream” by Helen Dunmore is a modernist work of fiction.

In modernist fiction, the author’s focus is on the inner struggles of the characters. In “Ice Cream”, very little action takes place beyond Clara’s sudden craving for ice cream. Then, modernist fiction often tends to disregard traditional plot structures. As the story shows, the falling action and the resolution are absent, while the story ends with the climax. 

Also, modernist fiction often explores common issues, which makes readers connect with the characters better. In “Ice Cream”, the issue of losing weight and maintaining one’s figure reminds readers of aspects of everyday life.
