Wishes

The theme of wishing and especially unfulfilled wishes is central to the story “I Don’t Dream of Genie” by Chad Pelley. It becomes obvious from the title, which contains the wordplay between “Gene” and “Genie”. According to Arabian legends, genies are supernatural creatures who can grant the wishes of their masters. Sherry’s wishes are connected to Gene and his presence in her life, even if it is only in dreams. Sherry’s longing for Gene leads her to attend the lucid dreaming-seminar, hoping to recreate the dream she had of him, and in which “everything was all right” (l. 49). Lucid dreaming is also strongly connected to the theme of wishes, since just like a genie it promises that a person who has mastered it can have all of his or her wishes granted with no consequences.
