Ben Okri begins his article “ ‘I can’t breathe’: why George Floyd’s words reverberate around the world” by wondering why the world has been so greatly affected by the murder of George Floyd. Okri says no other instance of injustice has caused such a reaction in black and white people alike in his lifetime. 

Okri says the phrase “I can’t breathe” resonated with people’s current fears regarding Covid-19, a virus that primarily affects the lungs. He says that despite the risk of catching Covid-19, people felt it necessary to join protests sparked by Floyd’s death. Okri says that many black people have died because of police brutality before, but this time, the link to people’s deep fears of Covid-19 helped call more attention to the issue.
