The sender of the article “‘I Am Going to Die if I Keep Living the Way I Am.’ She Was Right.”  is Beth Macy, a US-based author and journalist known for her detailed work with the opioid crisis. Her work culminated in the book Dopesick (2018) and the audiobook follow-up Finding Tess (2019), both of which contain more details about Tess’s story.

Macy followed Tess and her family over more than two years, so she has detailed knowledge about their specific case. She has also become personally involved, as we can see when she takes it upon herself to comfort Tess’s mother in her grief (ll. 94-96).
