Joy's parents

Joy’s parents are important characters of the short story “How to Pronounce Knife” by Souvankham Thammavongsa. The parents come from the Asian country of Laos and have immigrated to a Western country, where Joy’s father works. The description of their modest apartment suggests that their current financial situation is not good (ll. 5-10).

Joy’s mother does not work but is a homemaker, taking care of the home. She does not know much about her new country and also does not know how to read (ll. 59-60). That is why she dismisses the notes that Joy brings home from school. She is not familiar with Western school practices, as she believes the school will call her if it is something important, instead of simply sending notes.
