Title

The title of Andrew Vachss’ short story, “Hostage”, hints that readers are going to read a crime fiction narrative. The title also indicates that the narrative presents events related to a hostage situation. From the first lines of the story, this supposition is confirmed: “ ‘I’ve got a gun! Aimed right at her head. See? Take a look for yourselves. You make one move to come in here, I’ll blow her away!’ ” (p. 156, ll. 1-3).

As the story progresses, it is revealed that the title refers to all the important characters in the story, both literally and metaphorically. When Mark makes a deal with the police, he releases his mother and uses Walker as a hostage in her place: “ ‘What we do is, we let your mother go. We let her go outside. You still have me as a hostage.’ ” (p. 161, ll. 12-13). However, the plot twist reveals that Mark is a hostage of Walker’s mind games who will eventually become his victim. Furthermore, Mark was also his mother’s hostage, as he was constantly abused by her both in his childhood and in present days. Also, both Walker and Mark can also be considered hostages of their own minds.
