Social setting

The social setting explores traditional gender roles. Artie belittles Hope and Rochelle’s traumatic experience by joking about it (ll. 141-143). Also, he and his roommate smile “the way young men do because there is something powerful in the idea that a man can get a woman pregnant – a way to prove you are a man” (ll. 142-143). This suggests that the two think they are superior because they are men, which points to gender discrimination

The events take place in the 1960s when progressive social ideas (such as young people comfortable with having sex before marriage) were not matched by the law or beliefs of the older generation (abortion was illegal). This is also seen in the difference between Hope’s view on education and her mother’s belief that she should use her education to support her husband in getting a good career (ll. 12-14). Their views also point to generational differences
