Equality versus individuality

One of the themes explored in the short story “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut is the theme of equality versus individuality. The theme is mainly explored through the contrast between Harrison Bergeron and the other characters who are oppressed by the unfair egalitarian society. 

In 2081, all people are supposed to be equal. Their individuality disappears under artificial handicaps such as hideous masks, heavy weights, or instruments meant to prevent them from thinking too much.
