Characters

In William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet we meet numerous characters. 

Claudius is the villain of the play. After secretly murdering his brother - the former king - Claudius married his brother’s widow and ascended the throne. He is prepared to do anything to keep Hamlet from exposing him.

Hamlet is the main character and tragic hero of the play. Once he discovers that his uncle, Claudius, killed Hamlet’s father, he vows to take revenge. To do so, he must pretend to be mad, push everyone away, and develop from a sensitive thinker to a brutal killer. 

Gertrude is Hamlet’s mother and Claudius’ queen. It remains unclear whether she was in on her husband’s murder on the late king, but she does present herself as a loving mother to Hamlet.
