Uzma

Uzma is the youngest of the Manzoor children and appears in Sarfraz’s Manzoor’s autobiography Greetings from Bury Park. Unlike her siblings, who were born in Pakistan, Uzma was born in Britain. She is four years younger than Sarfraz and close to her brother. As a child, Uzma helps her mother with her dressmaking and treats the activity as a game: “Uzma and I would have races to see who could do twenty belts the quickest” (The Ties That Bind, 33%). 

As a teenager, Uzma is passionate about fashion and her style reflects her ambitions to have a life away from Luton:

While other Asian girls would parade through the Arndale Centre in their identikit uniforms of shalwaar kameez or hijabs, Uzma would be in a fake-fur coat, knee-length boots and nose ring. She would wear gree...
