Analysis

An analysis of the short story “Good Advice Is Rarer Than Rubies” by Salman Rushdie shows that it follows a chronological structure, focusing on events taking place over the course of a few hours. 

The main characters of the short story are Miss Rehana, a woman who arrives at the British Embassy, and Muhammad Ali, a man who usually scams women applying for visas. The story focuses on their meeting and the consequences of their interaction. 

The events take place at the British Embassy in Pakistan. The social setting of the story focuses on aspects such as migration, tradition, and gender roles in Pakistan, as well as society’s expectations of women.

The short story is told by a third-person narrator, who adopts Muhammad Ali’s point of view of the events. Through Muhammad Ali’s perspective, readers get to know Miss Rehana and understand the motivation behind her actions. 

The language used in the story is neutral, while the choice of words mirrors the authentic atmosphere of Pakistan. This also makes it easier for readers to understand the characters and have a better understanding of the local culture.
