Revolutions and their aftermath

Even though Animal Farm appears to be a tale about animals rising up against their masters to form a new society, it is clearly intended to directly reflect real developments related to the Russian Revolution and its aftermath. 

Through this example, the story also aims to make more general points about violent revolutions and the difficulties of forming a society afterwards. First of all, the story’s overall focus on the developments after the revolution has succeeded suggests that forming a new nation is hard work, and not as easily done as many revolutionaries may believe. 

Secondly, the rivalry between Napoleon and Snowball shows that the development of a new society may become more difficult when rival factions arise among the leaders of the revolution, and they may begin to fight among themselves. The story also shows that such rivals may be tempted to use extreme or even violent methods to silence their opponents, even if they may have claimed that the revolution was meant to give more democratic leadership.
