Title
The title of the short story “Fusilli” by Graham Swift has both a literal and a symbolic meaning.
In a literal sense, the title is a direct reference to a variety of pasta called fusilli. The name derives from an Italian word that means “spindle”, reflecting the twirled shape of the pasta. In the text, Doug advises his father to buy dried pasta instead of fresh, and he advises him to “Try the fusilli for a change. The little curly ones” (l. 39). Since this was the last time Doug spoke to his father before dying, the type of pasta also receives a symbolic meaning, as the pasta becomes a symbol of Doug's death in the father's mind.
