Through Literary Landscapes

Here we give you some quick notes for the extracts from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein that can be found in Through Literary Landscapes by Niels R. Back and Pia R. Sigh. 

Summary of Chapter 5 

This extract is told from Victor Frankenstein’s point of view. At this point, he is studying at university. He has become obsessed with the idea of creating life and has worked on it for two years. 

On a dark, stormy night in November, Frankenstein succeeds in animating the massive body which he has created from dead body parts. His excitement soon turns to horror, however. The creature looks repulsive and wrong. 

Frankenstein is overwhelmed and flees to his bedroom. Here, he dreams that he is holding the decaying bodies of his beloved Elizabeth and his mother. As he wakes up, the creature is by his bed and reaching for him, apparently smiling. Frankenstein flees in horror once again - this time to the courtyard. He stays there for the rest of the night, regretting that he ever gave life to the creature. 

Summary of Chapter 16 

This short extract is told from the creature’s point of view. At this point, he is feeling extremely upset and angry that everybody has rejected ...
