Composition

The extract “Family Matters” from Jeff Benedict’s and Armen Keteyian’s biography Tiger Woods is structured in two parts. The topic is the influence that Tiger Woods’ family had on him, and the influence parents have on their children in general. 

This is also highlighted by the title “Family Matters”, which could be considered to have a double meeting: One the one hand, it might refer to private issues or matters within a family, but, on the other hand, it could also suggest that family is important to you (it matters), since it can influence a child’s personality and choice of lifestyle.

The first part describes Tiger’s first day of kindergarten. The event is used to highlight what makes five-year-old Tiger different from other children. The authors present the point of view of the teachers to show that Tiger’s life was strictly controlled by his parents...
