Censorship and fake news

In countries that guarantee free speech policies, it is difficult to keep fake news under control. Because of this impediment, some have suggested that increased censorship can help prevent the spread of fake news. However, increased censorship might itself present a different problem.

The measure of increased censorship can compromise the freedom of the press, especially if used in less democratic states. Therefore, the governments in those countries could limit public access to news, regardless of whether it is fake or real, or suppress the real news in favour of fake news that favours the government’s agenda.
