Title

The title of Kevin Love’s essay “Everyone Is Going Through Something” is significant because it gives a brief and catchy summary of one of the central messages of the text: Everyone experiences some kind of mental struggle in the course of their lives. Love is trying to raise awareness about this, arguing that no matter how tough someone appears on the outside, they are probably dealing with something difficult on the inside.

The title also shows up in the final section of the essay, where it is both expanded upon and repeated for emphasis: “I want to end with something I’m trying to remind myself about these days: Everyone is going through something that we can’t see. I want to write that again: Everyone is going through something that we can’t see.” (ll. 99-101)

Here, Love makes the additional point that mental struggles are often invisible to observers, making it all the more important to encourage people to be open about their worries and emotions.

Beginning

Love’s essay has a dramatic opening, as he immediately reveals the shocking situation he is about to describe: “On November 5th, right after halftime against the Hawks, I had a panic attack.” (l. 1)...
