George

George is the husband of the main character in "Cat in the Rain" by Ernest Hemingway. He is an American man who likes to travel and read – throughout the story, he lies in bed reading a book. Just like his wife, he speaks some Italian: “ ‘Avanti,’ George said.” (l. 75)

There are no references to his outer characterisation in the story.

Inner characterisation

George’s inner characterisation is brief and constructed through his words and behaviour, and through contrast with the hotel owner’s behaviour.

Initially, George seems caring, as he offers to go outside and get the cat himself: “ ‘I’ll do it,’ her husband offered from the bed.” (l. 15)
