Discussion: Advantages and disadvantages

In your exam assignment, you are asked to discuss advantages and disadvantages of social media, taking your starting point in one of the three texts.

As you have seen in the Outlines section of the study guide, the three texts present several pros and cons of social media. We will look at the advantages and disadvantages mentioned in the three texts and add some extra points and questions you can consider in your discussion. 

Advantages of social media

When you read the three texts, you will observe that Text 2 and Text 3 present more advantages of social media compared to Text 1.

Text 1

One advantage of internet use and social media implied in Text 1 is that it helps in the work place: “the capabilities that technology offers them for work” (ll. 42-44).

Text 2 is mainly focused on the effects social media has on teenagers and youngsters. It presents advantages such as developing new social skills, the capability to adapt and making new connections:

Text 3 lists several advantages of social media from very different fields. The author argues that social media can have a positive impact on education, politics, health and socio-economic life.

Disadvantages of social media

Texts 1 and 3 are the ones that offer you a better starting point on a discussion of the pros and cons of social media. Nevertheless, even the author of Text 2 admits that the use of social media can have negative outcomes such as cyber- bullying or pornography targeting teenagers.

Text 1 is mainly focused on the disadvantages of social media for the mental health of both teenagers and adults.
