Presentation of the topic

Ink tattoos have become increasingly widespread throughout the years. What started among male workers or sailors many years ago, now seems to be common or even expected behaviour among both celebrities and young people in general.

An ink tattoo is a personal statement, and as more and more people chose to get tattoos, this phenomenon of permanently marking one’s body has become a widespread topic of much sociological research and, as seen in one of the texts, has also become target for prohibitions and the like. There are many alternating opinions about tattoos and what they represent and associate to, which is especially evident when reading the three texts that are the basis for this study guide.
