Structure

The short story “Your Shoes” by Michèle Roberts is structured in the form of a monologue of a mother who regrets the fact that her daughter has run away from home. In fact, the mother is writing a letter to her daughter, although she knows that she has nowhere to send it, and the girl will never read it. As the structure of the story is quite unusual, you will notice how plot elements (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution) are absent. In her monologue, the mother mixes present moments with events from the recent or distant past – which makes it quite difficult to pinpoint plot elements.
