Themes

The main themes of “Tickits” by Paul Milenski are communication and disability. These themes are enhanced through the motifs of parental neglect and perfectionism.

The story follows the main character, Toby, who tries to communicate his dissatisfaction with the world through giving tickets, because he cannot express his feelings verbally. Toby Heckler is a man who feels ‘everything is wrong’ in his world and would like to have the authority to make people listen to him and correct the wrongdoings he identifies. He tries to communicate this through the tickets he writes to all the people he meets who have committed an offense in his eyes. However, what he sees as offenses are barely illegalities. He gives tickets to people for being in the middle of the sidewalk, for tying their dogs to a parking meter or for throwing garbage on the street. Toby finds it hard to understand the world around him, and the social rules he observes are one way for him to try to understand.
