Summary
A nameless father goes to the supermarket early in the morning to buy something for his son, who is a drug addict. While strolling down the aisles of the store, the father recalls how his son’s drug addiction began and continued for twenty years. He recalls how he sought help in “Say-No-to-Drugs” books to save his son from his addiction. As the sleepless father wanders in the supermarket, his wife waits at home, resenting their son, wishing she could start over and return to a time when her son was only a child.
Shifting between the two parents’ perspectives, “The Rescue” describes the plight of a father eager to rescue his child as he watches Chilean miners being rescued from a collapsed mineshaft together with a group of strangers gathered...
