Narrator and point of view

The short story “The Penis” by Hanif Kureishi is a third person narration with a shifting point of view.

The third-person narrator is outside the plot and has limited knowledge of the events. Although the narrator has access to the thoughts and feelings of Alfie and Doug, he does not know how the events will unfold or what some of the other characters think: “His instinct was to drop it in a dustbin and go straight to work, but after a few minutes’ consideration he thought he would take it to an artist….” (p. 80, ll. 15-17); “Doug thought he might faint. He sat on the edge of the bath with his head between his legs, but the position only reminded him of his loss.” (p. 81, ll. 14-15)
