Symbols

Several elements of the setting play a symbolic role in the short story "The Osage Orange Tree" by William Stafford.

First and foremost, the Osage orange tree, which also titles the short story, is very important as it is symbolic of protection, the need for belonging and loneliness. Initially, the tree provides protection for the two youngsters as it is their place to meet without having to explain themselves to anybody. Consequently, the tree and the space around it become almost like a sacred space for the characters, the only place where they talk and interact.
