Narrator and point of view

The short story “The Osage Orange Tree” by William Stafford has a first-person narrator who is also one of the main characters. The events represent past teenage memories of the narrator who is probably already an adult at the time of the narration, as it is indicated by the past tense verbs.

However, most of the times the narrative is confined to the narrator’s limited perspective from his teenage years. Just like the readers, the narrator does not know why Evangeline is missing from the graduation ceremony, for instance:

"Evangeline couldn't come," he said. He stopped, looked at me again, and said, "She stole."
"Stole?" I said. "Stole what?"
