Language

The language used by Emma Lazarus in the poem “The New Colossus” is old-fashioned and reflects the style of the time when the poem was written. The poem has a solemn style, which mirrors the impressive appearance of the New Colossus as a symbol of welcoming people to America. 

When it comes to the choice of words, the poet introduces plenty of adjectives that highlight the contrast between America and Europe. For example, adjectives like “ancient” (l. 9) and “conquering” (l. 2) illustrate the military glory and the pretentiousness that America rejects. Adjectives like “mighty” (l. 4), “mild” (l. 7), and “silent” (l. 10) describe the New Colossus and, implicitly, America.
