Style of language

The language used in the short story “The Good Samaritan” by Charles Ardai is neutral. However, informal words and expressions like “nah” (p. 88, l. 1), “what the hell” (p. 89, l. 3), “son of a bitch” (p. 91, l. 8), and “bet your ass” (p. 91, l, 36), are inserted into the dialogue, giving it a realistic feel.

Short sentences are sometimes used to suggest the characters’ attitudes, like in the following example: “ ‘Sad story. Unhappy ending. Life goes on’ ” (p. 89, l. 13). Here, the sentences highlight the younger detective’s cynical view of life. 

When it comes to the choice of words, the mysterious and tense atmosphere is suggested by words such as “midnight” (p. 95, l. 6), “footsteps” (p. 95, l. 6), “deserted” (p. 96, l. 15) or “dark” (p. 98, l. 29). These words could also be considered to have negative ...
