Analysis

The short story “The Dutiful Daughter” by Saadat Hasan Manto is structured in the form of a story within a story. In the outer story, the first-person narrator focuses on his view of the consequences of the partition of British India. In the inner story, a liaison officer tells the narrator a story about a Pakistani woman looking for her daughter in India. 

In terms of characters, the first-person narrator is the main character in the outer story. In the inner story, the main character is the old Pakistani woman looking for her daughter in India, after the partition of British India into India and Pakistan. 

The events take place shortly after the partition of British India. The social setting focuses on the consequences of the partition. The narrative explores issues such as kidnapping, rape, and the conditions in refugee camps. 

The short story has a first-person narrator. In the outer story, the narrator talks about India after the partition. In the inner story, the identity of the narrator changes, but the first-person perspective remains. 

The language used in the story helps create the authentic atmosphere through careful choice of words, while the literary devices add to the meaning of the story.
