Middle
In the middle part of “Stench of Kerosene”, Guleri and Manak have an external conflict about the woman’s trip to Chamba. While Guleri is obviously excited, Manak asks her to stay home (p. 2, ll. 8-13). This marks a tension point, as Guleri does not understand her husband’s behavior. When Manak mentions his mother (p. 2, l. 14), this foreshadows his mother’s interference in his marriage.
Another moment of tension is introduced when, on their way to Chamba, Manak is conflicted and asks Guleri again to stay home (p. 3, ll. 1-2). Furthermore, a foreshadowing element suggests that something tragic is about to happen: “putting the flute to his lips, he blew a strange anguished wail of sound.” (p. 2, ll. 25-26), as that kind of sound is usually associated with suffering and grief.
