Literary perspective

The short story “Good Advice is Rarer than Rubies” by Amrita Pritam belongs to the modernist period in literature. 

One feature of modernism is the focus on current events or on issues that are contemporary to the author. In the story, Amrita Pritam explores gender roles in India and conforming to customs and traditions. Another modernist feature is the use of symbols, which reveal more about the characters and their motivation. For instance, kerosene and fire become symbols of guilt, but also symbols of the destruction of Guleri and Manak’s relationships.
