In this part of the study guide, we will focus on the themes present in “Singer of Songs”. The text is mainly about taking chances in life. We discover issues of conformity and personal frustration weaved together.

In your analysis, think about how the two characters, Mac and Gordon, are representative for two very different lifestyles. Gordon has been living what appears to be a life of adventure in Africa while Mac has settled for an average life in Scotland. 

Mac compares his life with that of Gordon and is frustrated about what he sees as failures in his personal and professional life. His relationship with his wife is challenging and his job doesn’t bring him much satisfaction. He does not do anything to change it.

“My job was the boring one, working on electronics all day, making up songs and playing my guitar in the house while Janet was out with her social peers, or drinking in the pubs with my mates whenever she was at home”. (ll. 88-90)
