Summary

“Singer of Songs” by Ken McBeath narrates an episode from Mac’s life, a middle-aged songwriter, who is living a mediocre, unhappy life in Edinburgh, Scotland. Mac goes to a pub to meet up with his college friend, Gordon, who lives and works in Africa, as a diamond exploration geologist. In the pub, the two friends share old memories and watch sports. Mac envies Gordon’s life which, compared to his own, seems full of adventure. Mac tells Gordon that he is unhappy with his marriage and with his job. Gordon shares some exciting tales of African adventures with snakes and mined lands. But, to Mac’s surprise, Gordon also confesses that he finds his occupation as a geologist boring.
