Summary

The short story “Safe Enough” by Lee Child begins with a description of the main character’s past. Wolfe grew up in the city and worked as an electrician, having never seen the countryside. He first experiences something like the countryside when he is recruited through unions to work in the suburbs. He soon discovers he enjoys his new working environment. Soon enough, he also becomes attracted to Mary Lovell, a woman who lives in the area. 

Wolfe begins to follow her and spends time on her property without her knowing. He also finds out Mary is unhappily married to a man who is working on Wall Street. One day he witnesses a fight between them in which the husband slaps her.
