Summary

In “Number 40” by Sarah Butler, Melissa forgets her phone; she has left it at home on the new table that her boyfriend Simon bought. On the bus to a work meeting, she decides not to go back for the phone. She begins thinking about a holiday she and Simon went on the year before, in Santorini. She imagines various reactions that Simon could have if she were to call him to talk about the holiday.

At the work meeting, Melissa feels invisible, and when she goes to the toilet and sees herself in the mirror, she notices that she looks very pale and white. She thinks about the new house she and Simon bought, which is too opulent for her taste, and about needing another holiday. On the bus back home she spots a woman who reminds her of a work colleague...
