Summary

Even though her father has recently died, Annie (the narrator in “No Angel” by Bernie McGill) keeps seeing him as she goes around her daily life. First, she sees him in the bathroom, after a shower. The man is shaving and looks almost as he did when was alive. He advises Annie to replace the bathroom tiles and disappears. The next time she sees him it is through the window of a train. This makes Annie recall an old photograph of her parents when they were young. Over the Christmas holiday, Annie goes to dinner with her boyfriend Thomas and his parents. She can sense his parents are analysing her. The fact that she and Thomas are different does not bother them (they have different religions - Catholic and Protestant).

When she goes outside the restaurant for some fresh air, she sees her father descending from a bus. Her father does not approve of Annie’s relationship with Thomas because they are different. He reminds her of the fact that her brother Robbie was killed by people similar to...
