Summary

“Ice Break” by Astrid Blodgett starts with Dawn, her sister Janie, and their father, who are driving on a frozen lake when the ice breaks and the truck begins to sink.

Earlier that day Dawn, her two sisters, and her parents were together at their house. When Dawn’s father announced he was going fishing, the mother warned him about the ice being too thin, yet she decided to send Dawn with him. Dawn, who did not want to be alone with her father, bribed her sister Jeanie to come with them. Their older sister Marla teased her siblings about a secret concerning some former neighbours who got a divorce. Dawn believes that her sister wanted to tell them that their parents were also going to divorce.
