Narrator and point of view

The short story “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keyes is a first-person narration, told from the perspective of the main character, Charlie Gordon.

Because the plot involves the narrator changing from a mentally disabled person into a super intelligent human being, his reliability and the tone of the narration also change.

Initially, when we realize the narrator is mentally challenged, his reliability is questionable, as it is clear he does not truly understand what is happening around him or the motivations of the other characters’ actions: “Sometimes somebody will say hey look at Joe or Frank or George he really pulled a Charlie Gordon. I dont know why they say that but they always laft.”
