Falling man

Lianne is oddly fascinated by the performance artist David Janiak, known as The Falling Man. She watches him up close as he is making one of his famous performances at a train station. Like the rest of the New Yorkers, Lianne is shocked by what he is doing, but at the same time curious to find out what motivates him. One day she reads in the paper that he has died and she starts an extensive internet research trying to learn more about his background. She is unable to understand his need to make everyone relive those horrible moments when people jumped from the towers ("The man eluded her", p. 224, l. 1, ch. 13).  Nevertheless, he evokes strong feelings in her: "Headlong, free fall, she thought, and this picture burned a hole in her mind and heart, dear God, he was a falling angel and his beauty was horrific." (p. 222, ll. 5-7, ch. 13)

The role of the performance artist in the novel and Lianne’s fascination with him put into question the role of art, its possibilities and limitations, in portraying reality and in this case horrific and traumatic events.
