Theme and message

The main theme of the short story “Faith” by Nick Hornby is finding one’s sense of purpose through faith and determination. This theme is illustrated by both Brian and Sarah. The author’s message is that it is never too late for one to achieve a sense of direction in one’s life and to change for the best.

Initially, this theme is illustrated by Brian. He, through his determination and faith that the manager of the Arsenal football team would make the correct decision, made a commitment to not leave the roof of the house. Note that Brian never actually knew whether his gesture would bring by a change or not.
