Social setting

In what the social setting is concerned, the story presents two categories of people. On the one hand, we have the category of football fans and enthusiasts, represented by Brian, but also by Paul and his friends who organise the Championship party. “The excitement seems to rub off on the area” (p. 47, ll. 31-32) and influence football enthusiasts, but also football managers such as “George” (p. 48, l. 33), who is actually former Arsenal manager George Graham. Brian, through his determination, represents unconventionalism and excitement, which disrupts the dull life of those living in the lower-middle class in North London.

On the other hand, we have the category of couples that are “stuck” (p. 46, l. 19) in a routine and who represent conformity.
