Narrator and point of view

The short story “Faith” by Nick Hornby is a third-person narrative rendered by an anonymous narrator who is outside the action. Although the narrator focuses on Paul, Sarah, and Brian, it is clear that more attention is given to Sarah and her thoughts. For instance, here is an example of Sarah’s perspective on the events, which is rendered in free indirect speech:

What about work? What about money? What about sleep and friends and smoking and drinking and travelling and what about eating curry, for God’s sake, which babies don’t like and she does, and what about hallo Nellie the Elephant and goodbye Ella Fitzgerald and what about having to see Paul’s mum and dad all the time because this would be their first grandchild… (p. 46, ll. 7-12)
