Analysis

The analysis of the excerpt from “Burmese Days” by George Orwell reveals that it follows a chronological plot structure. The conflict is external, as the two main characters are having an argument and hold two opposite viewpoints.

The main characters in this excerpt are Mr Flory, an English timber merchant, and Dr Veraswami, a Burmese Indian doctor. The two are friends and frequently meet to discuss politics. They often repeat the same argument, in which neither can persuade the other to change their opinion.

The physical setting is Burma during the time when it was a province of British India. The social setting explores attitudes towards the British Empire, racism, and oppression.

The story is told from the point of view of a third-person narrator who appears to be omniscient. We do not know much about the narrator from this passage, as he or she focuses mainly on the conversation between the two main characters.

The language is formal, and the story consists mostly of dialogue. The language in the dialogue gives further insight into the background and way of thinking of the two characters.
