Taler: Barack Obama

Symbols

In the speech, we can identify one powerful symbol – the young immigrant Astrid Silva whom Barack Obama mentions towards the end (ll. 115-125). In the address, Silva becomes a symbol for all the illegal immigrants whom Barack Obama wants to help through his measure of granting them a legal permit to stay in the US. Her example becomes symbolic of the illegal immigrants who are victims of the faulty immigration system Obama wants to change.
