Analysis

The analysis of the short story “A Very Short Story” by Ernest Hemingway shows that it follows a linear, chronological plot structure. The narrative centers around the relationship between two people and their eventual break-up.

The main characters in the story are the soldier and Luz. They have a conflict at some point in their relationship, which remains unresolved, leading to their break-up.

The physical setting is Italy, during the First World War. The social setting explores war and gender roles.

The story is told from the point of view of a third-person narrator who appears to be omniscient. However, we only get insight into the soldier’s thoughts and feelings.

The language is neutral. The style of language is concise and minimalistic, transmitting the information in a straightforward manner.
